The Mallala Motorsport Park track has been used in anger for the first time since Christmas after curing of the new Northern Hairpin surface.
Saturday 13 February saw the Porsche Club of SA’s Supersprint #1 take place under clear skies with an entry list of 30 cars. This was followed on Sunday by over 40 varied cars competing in the Austin 7 Club’s Modern Regularity, along with Superkart races.
Circuit improvements are continuing, with the next stage including extension of tyre barriers at turns 3, 5 and 8.
Derek Onslow has recently joined our team at Mallala as Day Activity Coordinator. After qualifying in Mechanical Engineering, Derek has worked in supply of composites & precision sheet metalwork to aerospace, defence, telecommunications & general manufacturing; including a 14-year stint with Hills Industries. Most recently, Derek worked in construction & personnel management, supplying to the Air Warfare Destroyer project and managing scaffold engineering on the Adelaide Festival Centre roof refurbishment.
Derek is a keen motorsports enthusiast, having raced karts in England and Adelaide. His move to Adelaide was triggered by attendance at the 1989 Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix, and he has never failed to watch an F1 race since. He keenly follows Supercars, Moto GP & IndyCar, and can be found riding & fixing dirt bikes in his spare time.
“Working in motorsport in SA is the dream job for me. With a classic, character-filled old-school circuit like Mallala, the vastly impressive multi-purpose facility at The Bend Motorsport Park, and fond memories of all past events on the Adelaide Parklands Circuit, SA well and truly punches above its weight in motorsport. The knowledge, commitment and passion of the fans, officials & public is an absolute credit to the state”.
